Winter tires – now what? Rims, too?

So you decided that in the better interests of road safety for you and your family that you will make winter tires a part of your new annual automotive regimen.

A smart move. But in many ways, that is only half of the overall equation. Do you have your all-season radials removed from your fancy alloy rims and re-shoe them with winter rubber?

Yes, of course you can.

But if you are like many people these days and are considering keeping your vehicle longer than before (low finance rates also help in this decision) then you may consider purchasing a set of steel rims, specifically for your winter rubber. In the long term, it will save you time – and money.

First of all, the process of mounting and un-mounting tires creates the risk of tearing the tire’s bead and possible sidewall distortion. Remember the roads last years? Slush, salt and sand are all corrosive elements that eat away at alloy wheels.

You may hear steel rims (usually plain black) referred to as take offs. You can buy them almost anywhere. Talk to your service advisor at NewRoads Chevrolet Cadillac Buick GMC. They’ll likely be able to offer you an affordable package of tires and rims to suit most budgets.

And how exactly will time be saved? By having a second set of rims with your winter tires, seasonal changes become quick and inexpensive with little to no hassle.

And the rims you can take from one vehicle to the next – as long as size-wise, for example, they fulfill the manufacturer’s criteria. And remember, to keep the take offs in their best shape, make sure they are clean and dry before your store them for the winter.
