Learning the lingo of fuel economy

With the cost of fuel going higher and higher, everyone is looking for ways to get better fuel economy with their vehicles. Vehicles are becoming more and more efficient as new technologies emerge and become mainstream. When it comes to fuel economy, there are several different systems that vehicles can use to conserve fuel.

Flex fuel vehicles are specifically designed to run on gasoline or gasoline blends that can contain up to 85 per cent ethanol. With only a few modifications to the engines, drivers typically don’t notice any difference in performance. What’s interesting is that since ethanol contains less energy per litre than gasoline, drivers will see less kilometres per litre when using the ethanol based blend.

Eco Boost is a technology that maintains vehicle performance while achieving approximately 20 per cent better fuel efficiency and 15 per cent reduced greenhouse emissions.

Hybrids are one of the most popular options when it comes to fuel efficiencies and many models now offer this as an option. Hybrid vehicles can operate in three different modes. They can run on gas only, on an electric motor or on a combination of the two. With Toyota hybrids, the vehicle never needs to be plugged in. These vehicles produce up to 70 per cent less emissions and superior fuel economy without sacrificing power.

Aside from technologies built into the vehicle, the way you drive can also have a big impact on your fuel economy. Make sure that your tires are properly inflated, lighten your load by removing things you don’t need, use cruise control to maintain your speed and don’t idle. Anticipate stop lights and signs and stop sprinting from red light to red light. Keeping your vehicle properly maintained, including changing your air filter on a regular basis can also help you get more mileage out of every tank of gas.
